Israel quits after death threats
Ruben Israel has resigned as the head coach of Colombian side Santa Fe after receiving death threats phonecalls at the weekend.
Club president Armando Farfan announced 51-year-old Israel stepped down after just one month at the helm because anonymous callers pressured him to sign certain players.
Farfan told a press conference that the Uruguayan boss had refused to make a u-turn on his decision.
He said: "Yesterday at about 5pm, the coach received the first call with threats to his life.
"Half an hour later, there was a second call, a little bit tougher, and Israel immediately called for a meeting with the board.
"He told us he was not going to continue. We met until 11pm trying to persuade him. We told him we could protect him.
"Today we met again, two players attended, and he said the decision was made.
"The threats were regarding imposing some players on Santa Fe. He has the names and will reveal it when he is in his homeland.
"The people who called said they were members of the hooligan groups, but we had been congratulated on Israel's arrival and the job he was doing."
Israel replaced former Colombia, Ecuador and Guatemala boss Hernan Dario Gomez in late May.
