Coupet vows to atone for Madrid failure

New Paris St Germain goalkeeper Gregory Coupet insists he will prove his doubters wrong after a nightmare season at Atletico Madrid.

The 36-year-old France international only joined Atletico last summer but found playing time difficult to come by at the Vicente Calderon, largely playing back-up to Leo Franco.

Coupet has now returned to Ligue 1, signing a two-year deal with PSG, and the veteran keeper is eager to prove he is not too old for the job.

"If I was 25 I would also think that it strange for a 36-year-old goalkeeper to be playing at PSG," he told Le Parisien. "It's logical to think that. It's up to me to prove them wrong.

"My strength is my enormous desire to play. I need it too much.

"I'm coming from a huge failure in sporting terms because I did not play at Atletico Madrid. Instead of getting me down, this increased my desire to play tenfold.

"Playing matches is my life. I was born for this. I need the adrenaline of games.

"I needed to be deprived of playing for me to understand what a competitor I was."

Prior to joining Atletico, Coupet spent 12 seasons at Lyon, where he won seven successive league titles from 2002, having started his career at St Etienne.

Yesterday's signing saw Mickael Landreau, who has been an ever present during his three years at the Parc des Princes, move to Lille and Coupet admitted that was one of his conditions before putting pen to paper.

"I put one condition on my arrival," he added. "The position needed to be free.

"Mika is a friend and it was out of the question that I would come if he was still at the club.

"It's not my habit to pinch the position of a mate."
