Europa League First Round Review

Europa League First Round Review

A brace from John Sutton helped Motherwell advance to the Europa League qualifying second round as they beat Llanelli 3-0.

Sutton's first-half double and Jamie Murphy's add-on ensured that there would be no European giant-killing as the Scottish Premier League side overturned a one-goal first-leg disadvantage to savour a needed victory at the Parc Y Scarlets.

Motherwell now face Albanian outfit KS Flamurtari after disposing of their part-time hosts.

Steve Evans' 11th-minute strike got The New Saints off to a flyer against Fram but the Welsh side failed to make the most of their chances and slid out of the Europa League at the first stage.

Evans' goal levelled the tie on aggregate after they lost 2-1 win in Reykjavik a week ago and would have been enough to send the hosts through on away goals if the score had stayed that way.

But the lead lasted just 11 minutes before Almar Ormarsson equalised and when Londoner Sam Tillen fired home a 66th-minute spot-kick after a foul by Phillip Baker, the home side's hopes were effectively over.

Sligo Rovers slipped out of the Europa League in Albania despite forcing a gutsy 1-1 draw against Vllaznia.

Trailing 2-1 from last week's first leg in Ireland, the visitors fell further behind when Ndricim Shtubina scored for Vllaznia two minutes before the break.

But Vioresin Sinani's 79th minute sending-off prompted a late rally by the visitors, who reduced the aggregate deficit through Alan Keane five minutes from time.

However, Vllaznia held on for a narrow aggregate win as Conor O'Grady was dismissed deep into injury time.

Jimmy Brown's call for his Lisburn Distillery players to improve on their first leg drubbing at the hands of Zestafoni fell on deaf ears as they suffered a lost 6-0 in Georgia and 11-1 on aggregate.

In the night's final game, Linfield's slim hopes of staging a miraculous fightback were swiftly ended as Randers cantered to a 3-0 win in Lurgan to build on their 4-0 first leg success.
