Lyon to miss out on star duo
Lyon may have splashed the cash this summer - but Loic Remy and Andre-Pierre Gignac look to be out of Les Gones' reach.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas insists his club will continue to splash the cash this summer - but Loic Remy and Andre-Pierre Gignac are two players who look to be out of Les Gones' reach.
Striker Lisandro Lopez, Lyon's 24 million euros signing from Porto, was presented to the press yesterday and left-winger Michel Bastos is expected to complete his 18m euros move to the Stade Gerland from Lille today.
However, Lyon are not ready to stop there and have put in big-money bids for three players - Nice forward Remy, Toulouse striker Gignac and Porto left-back Aly Cissokho.
Aulas said: "We have decided this year to try to build as brilliant a team as possible.
"That will cost us a little more than we had expected."
Remy, who was sold by Lyon to Nice for 8m euros last summer, is high up on their list of targets but Nice put their foot down last night.
A statement from the southerners read: "Following a meeting of the administrative board, Nice have decided to bring to a definitive end all negotiations with Lyon concerning the transfer of Loic Remy."
Lyon's last bid for Remy had been 13.5m euros plus left-winger Anthony Mounier, who has been rated as worth 5m euros.
As for Gignac, Toulouse are just as determined as Nice to keep their star attacker.
They released a statement this morning, which read: "TFC confirm their president Olivier Sadran had Jean-Michel Aulas on the phone last night to reaffirm to him one last time, if that was needed, that Andre-Pierre Gignac was not for sale.
"It is therefore preferable for Lyon to fix their sights on players belonging to clubs willing to envisage a transfer."
Lyon are believed to have put in two bids for Gignac, the second one amounting to 15.5m euros.
