OM move opening home fixture
Marseille have confirmed their first home match of the new Ligue 1 season will not be played at the Stade Velodrome.
An inquiry has been launched as a result of an incident that took place on July 16, when part of a roof of a stage built at the stadium for a Madonna concert collapsed, killing two workers.
The inquiry will not be completed by the time OM are scheduled to play Lille on August 16, the second weekend of the championship.
The match will now take place at Montpellier's Stade de la Mosson, the club have confirmed.
The Mediterranean side were informed of the decision following a meeting held today in Marseille at which city mayor Jean-Claude Gaudin and club representatives were among those present.
A statement released by the club on their official website www.om.net read: "The OM-Lille match will not be played at the Stade Velodrome. Jean-Claude Gaudin has informed OM about it this Wednesday morning.
"This (is) because of the inquiry and the time necessary to clear and lay a new pitch after the drama caused by the collapse of the Madonna concert stage, on July 16.
"As a consequence, the match will be played at the Stade de la Mosson in Montpellier, as indicated on Tuesday by (Marseille president) Jean-Claude Dassier."
Mayor Gaudin is quoted in the statement as telling reporters: "On August 16, we cannot play at the Velodrome because the work of the experts will not be finished."
Marseille's second home game is scheduled for August 30, when they play champions Bordeaux.
Rugby union side Toulon have arranged to play Racing Metro at the Stade Velodrome on August 22.
