Trio secure safe passages
Liga Deportiva Universitaria, Vitoria and Union Espanola advanced to the Copa Sudamericana last 16.
The Ecuadorians played out a 1-1 draw on their visit to Libertad of Paraguay, following a 1-0 win in the first leg.
Javier Gonzalez levelled the tie for Libertad in the 32nd minute but unmarked Edison Mendez squared the scores on the night with a long-distance shot just after the hour mark.
Liga will now play the winners of the tie between Argentinian duo Lanus and River Plate, while this was the fourth time in a row Libertad were eliminated in the Copa Sudamericana first round.
Even though Vitoria enjoyed a two-goal lead over Coritiba from last week, the tie became much more difficult than expected for them.
Two minutes into the second half, Marcelinho Paraiba opened the scoring for Coritiba before Renatinho levelled the tie 10 minutes later.
In the penalty shoot-out, Coritiba defender Jeci was the only player to miss, while Roger netted the decisive spotkick to help Vagner Mancini's side advance.
Mancini paid tribute to the attitude of his players, saying: "I should highlight the fight of the players and the five who shot the penalties were more exposed. We suffered but the important thing is that we clinched the qualification."
Vitoria next face River Plate of Uruguay or Bolivia's Blooming. The Uruguayans enjoy a 3-0 lead from the first leg after the Conmebol punished Blooming following an incident where a supporter hit River striker Henry Gimenez. The second leg is being played on Thursday.
Finally, a 17th-minute strike from Mario Aravena following a David Ramirez assist gave Union Espanola a 1-0 win over Colombia's La Equidad and a 3-2 aggregate victory.
The Colombian side ended the game with nine men after Jherson Cordoba and Hugo Soto were shown red cards, one in each half.
Union Espanola now play Velez Sarsfield or Boca Juniors. The Argentinian pair drew 1-1 in the first leg.
