Gorkss keeps Latvia hopes alive

Kaspars Gorkss' header secured a priceless 1-0 away win over Israel that moves Latvia up to second in Group Two of the European World Cup qualification zone.

Gorkss met a Aleksandrs Cauna cross after 59 minutes to decide the game and effectively end Israel's hopes of reaching next summer's finals in South Africa.

Latvia by contrast moved level with Greece on 13 points after the Mediterranean nation lost 2-0 at leaders Switzerland.

Switzerland knocked 10-man Greece from the Group Two summit after two late goals gave Ottmar Hitzfeld's side a crucial victory in Bern.

The hosts rarely threatened despite the 42nd-minute dismissal of Loukas Vintra after the Greece defender picked up two yellow cards.

But the visitors ran out of steam in the closing stages as strikes from Stephane Grichting and Marko Padalino sealed three points for the Swiss.

Moldova doubled their points tally to two, after seven World Cup matches, thanks to a goalless stalemate at home to fellow strugglers Luxembourg on a rainy night in Chisinau.

Luxembourg's Gilles Bettmer had the first significant chance but his long-range free-kick parried by goalkeeper Stanislav Namasco.

Alexandr Gatcan twice went close for Moldova who also saw Denis Calincov waste another chance to break the deadlock.
