Howard taking no chances

United States goalkeeper Tim Howard expects his country's World Cup qualifier against Trinidad & Tobago to be tough.

USA came from behind with goals from Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore to beat El Salvador 2-1 in Utah last weekend and top the CONCACAF table alongside Honduras on 13 points - one above Mexico and Costa Rica.

Trinidad & Tobago have just five points, at the bottom alongside El Salvador.

Howard nonetheless anticipates a spirited display from the hosts tomorrow.

"I don't think anybody gives up, but obviously it's deflating for them," he said.

"It's still a home game and you wonder how their crowd will react to them.

"I think the best thing for us is to go down there with our focus and the right mind-set."

Trinidad & Tobago head coach Russell said: "Realistically, it is very difficult now.

"We're in a situation where in order to qualify we have to win our three games - and we have to depend on other results from the other teams, so it makes it very difficult."

Costa Rica head into their trip to El Salvador on the back of a painful 3-0 home defeat to Mexico last Saturday.

Ticos boss Rodrigo Kenton said: "We were on top of the standings - but it did not help us.

"We must stop, think and start again. We have not done things the best way. We must correct things in midfield and attack, make some changes in order to do our job right."

El Salvador coach Carlos de los Cobos said: "This is a chance to keep learning, growing up.

"We still think of playing the World Cup, but it is very difficult."

Mexico and Honduras play in Mexico City to see who can take the lead with two more rounds to go.

Mexico boss Javier Aguirre is worried about Honduras' goalscoring power.

"We are playing 90 difficult minutes against a team who have scored a number of goals," he said.

"They have great attackers, and we respect them a lot. They are a serious, well-coached side."
