A-League Weekend Preview

Gold Coast United will be looking to get back to winning ways against Wellington Phoenix in round nine of the A-League.

Gold Coast United will be looking to get back to winning ways when they host Wellington Phoenix at Skilled Park in round nine of the A-League tomorrow.

Gold Coast are without a win from their last three games and have conceded eight goals during that spell.

However, coach Miron Beiberg has been boosted by the return of top scorer Shane Smeltz and the New Zealand international will once again partner former Hartlepool striker Joel Porter in attack.

Midfielder Robson is due to return from a knee injury while defender Bas Va Brink has shaken off the effects of a flu virus and should play a part tomorrow.

Defender Michael Thwaite is confident Gold Coast can get their title charge back on track with a victory.

"Hopefully there will be a couple of key players returning to the side this week and that will give everyone a boost," Thwaite told Gold Coast's official website.

"Shane is a quality striker and it will be great to have him back in the side. His partnership with Joel was working really well before Joel got injured and it's great news for us that they are both back.

"Despite the two losses we're still top of the table so there's plenty of positives there for us and we can get back on track this week."

Robbie Fowler and his team-mates will be hoping to guide North Queensland Fury to only their second victory of the season when they travel to Perth Glory on Saturday.

The Fury know they need to improve their defence having conceded the most goals, 16, in the league.

Their task will not be easy, however, against a Perth side that have enjoyed a good run of form lately, winning successive away games to climb up the standings.

Perth are second in the table but level on points with leaders Gold Coast and Sydney FC and have the perfect chance to claim top spot for themselves with a win over Fury.

But, just one point behind are Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory and the two sides meet at Ettihad Stadium on Saturday.

Roar skipper Craig Moore received a welcome boost ahead of the game with a call-up to the Australia national team for the first time in seven months.

Moore has been one of the standout performers so far this season and, although he was delighted with his return to the Socceroos, he is fully focused on this weekend's game.

"I'm confident that if you limit the supply to Archie Thompson, you keep (Carlos) Hernandez quiet and you limit Kevin Muscat's distribution I believe you do stop Melbourne," he said.

"That's easy for me to sit here and say that, you need to put that into practice and do it on the particular day."

Elsewhere, Sydney FC will rack up their 100th appearance in the A-League when they host rivals Central Coast Mariners on Holiday Monday.

Sydney have been a member of the league since its foundation in 2005 and will be keen to mark such an historic occasion with a win that could feasibly send them top of the table.

Finally, Newcastle Jets will be hoping new signing Michael Bridges will be granted his visa in time to play against Adelaide United.

"I felt like I've got something to offer but I had to come out here and prove myself," Bridges said.

"I wasn't just going to walk in here. The lads have put me through my paces with the team and it has all been well and good and I am excited to be part of the Jets team."
