A-League Weekend Preview

A-League Weekend Preview

Melbourne Victory will look to extend their winning streak to four games in tomorrow's top-of-the-table clash with leaders Sydney.

After enduring their worst start to an A-League campaign, Ernie Merrick's side have bounced back with away wins over Adelaide United and Gold Coast United before recording a first home win of the season against Brisbane Roar last Saturday.

Melbourne are boosted by the news Carlos Hernandez will be available after being overlooked by Costa Rica and will look to break down a Sydney defence which has only conceded seven goals in nine games this season.

Evan Berger has returned to the squad after recovering from hernia surgery and is set to take Mate Dugandzic's spot on the bench.

"We just love the big games, it's going to be a big month for us," said Merrick.

"We've got three points off the Roar, we're going to have a real go at Sydney who are playing well this year under the new coach.

"We'll have Adelaide later in the month, we live for these big games and Etihad Stadium will come alive.

"I can't see too many changes in the first XI, but we'll have Evan back on the bench this week."

Sydney coach Vitezslav Lavicka, who watched his side move top of the table with a 1-0 win over Central Coast Mariners on Monday, welcomes back John Aloisi from injury, while young prospect Kofi Danning is also available after returning from under-20 duty at the World Cup in Egypt.

Also on Friday, fourth-placed Perth entertain Adelaide at Members Equity Stadium looking to extend their unbeaten streak to four games, although the Glory are hoping to record a first home win in three games.

Chris Coyne will captain Perth in the absence of the suspended Jacob Burns, while Serbian striker Branko Jelic is set to start after being restricted to just a second-half appearance in last week's 1-1 draw with North Queensland Fury after suffering a bout of flu.

Adelaide will be without Lucas Pantelis after the midfielder missed the last two training sessions with a knee injury. He has been replaced in the squad by Fabian Barbiero.

On Sunday, the Mariners entertain North Queensland, while Gold Coast travel to Brisbane.

North Queensland will be without Shane Stefanutto after the left-back suffered a season-ending knee injury last week.

Shane Huke is set to make his return for the Mariners after four months on the sidelines in a welcome boost for coach Lawrie McKinna with Michael McGlinchey and John Hutchinson both on international duty.

Gold Coast will be without A-League top scorer Shane Smeltz with the striker looking to help New Zealand qualify for next year's World Cup finals in the first leg of their play-off against Bahrain on Saturday, while Jason Culina is on international duty with Australia.

United are boosted by the return of Steve Pantelidis and Steve Fitzsimmons from suspension, while Tahj Minniecon is available after returning from under-20 duty in Egypt.

Brisbane will be without suspended duo Danny Tiatto and Charlie Miller, while captain Craig Moore has also been called up by Australia and Brazilian playmaker Henrique has been ruled out for up to two months after suffering a knee injury.
