Al Hilal consolidate top spot

Al Hilal moved three points clear at the top of the Saudi League courtesy of a 5-1 victory over Al Fateh in the sixth round of matches.

Al Hilal moved three points clear at the top of the Saudi League tonight courtesy of a 5-1 victory over Al Fateh in the sixth round of matches.

The win was Al Hilal's fifth of the season and saw them move three points ahead of Al Shabab and four clear of defending champions Al Ittihad, who have two games in hand.

Al Hilal struggled in the first half against Al Fateh but eventually broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, when Mohamad Al Shalhoub converted a spot-kick.

The Riyadh giants doubled their cushion three minutes later through Brazilian midfielder Thiago Neves and then Yasser Al Qahtani put Al Hilal further clear seven minutes after the hour.

Swedish midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson netted the fourth goal on 72 minutes and Al Shalhoub's second goal of the evening two minutes from time made it five.

Ahmed Abo Obaid grabbed a last-minute consolation for Al Fateh but it was too little, too late.

Also tonight, Al Ahli beat Al Qadisiya 2-1 to climb to fourth.

Argentinian striker Javier Toledo put Al Ahli ahead after 75 minutes from the penalty spot and, although Al Qadisiya levelled three minutes later through Nasser Al Salmi, an 86th-minute Saeid Al Shon own goal gave Al Ahli all three points.

Al Nasr continued their disappointing form as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Najran.

Mohamad Al Sahlawi gave Al Nasr the lead on 65 minutes, only for Najran to restore parity three minutes later through Guinean striker Ibrahim Camara.

Al Nasr should have won the game with an 81st-minute penalty, but Saad Al Harthi failed from the spot.

Finally, Al Ittifaq suffered their third defeat of the season with a 3-2 reverse against Al Hazm.

Walied Al Jizani set Al Hazm on their way after 22 minutes and Senegalese striker Hamad Ji made it 2-0 10 minutes into the second half. Al Jizani grabbed his second goal of the night two minutes after the hour.

Al Ittifaq pulled a goal back through Youssef Al Salem on 80 minutes before Abdulrahman Al Qahtani scored their second goal in the last minute of the game, but they could not force the equaliser.
