A-League Weekend Preview

A-League Weekend Preview

Melbourne Victory will be without Thailand international Surat Sukha for their crucial A-League encounter with Perth Glory.

While Roddy Vargas is set to return after missing the 3-1 win over Adelaide United that saw Melbourne move into second, Surat's absence due to a hamstring injury means yet another defensive absentee and Matt Kemp believes that may have contributed to their below-par record at the back this season.

"We have made some silly errors," said the defender.

"I'm not sure if it's because of the inconsistency of the personnel there or not but it's something we are working on and as defenders we would like to keep a lot more clean sheets and we will start doing that this weekend hopefully."

Fourth-placed Perth have problems of their own with winger Viktor Sikora out for two weeks due to a hamstring injury while Mile Sterjovski is doubtful with an ankle complaint.

Nevertheless, midfielder Adriano Pellegrino insists Glory go into the clash full of confidence.

"We know we've done well against Melbourne so now we've got to pick up the points at home and keep winning and getting results," said the 25-year-old.

Leaders Sydney FC host Wellington Phoenix at Sydney Football Stadium with the visitors in buoyant mood following last week's 6-0 thrashing of former pacesetters Gold Coast United.

However, striker Paul Ifill warned no-one at the club was getting carried away by the stunning result.

"We'll go into the game against Sydney with confidence, but we know one swallow doesn't make a summer," he said.

"It'll be a very hard game, they're top of the table, and they gave us our worst beating of the season the last time we played them over there. We'll be going there aiming to sort them out."

Despite topping the table, Sydney have come in for some criticism over their style of play but skipper Steve Corica underlined the Sky Blues squad just shrug it off.

"I can only wonder what they'd be saying if we were mid-table or near the bottom," he said.

"We're copping some criticism but getting some results so that's all that counts. If they are going to give us stick then so be it - we've just got to cop it and get on with playing football."

Adelaide United travel to Central Coast Mariners with Reds defender Robert Cornthwaite keen to get back to winning ways at Canberra Stadium following last week's Melbourne loss.

"Things have been pretty inconsistent, we haven't been able to string two wins together, and if we want to make a real tilt for the championship that's something we're going to need to change," he said.

Mariners lost the F3 derby to Newcastle Jets last time out and skipper Alex Wilkinson is also anticipating a tough clash against Adelaide.

"They beat Sydney with 10 men the week before and last week I think they were a bit unlucky to go 3-1 down against Melbourne," he said.

Gold Coast host bottom side North Queensland Fury at Skilled Park with keeper Scott Higgins, who replaces Jess Vanstrattan (back), stressing they were keen to erase the memory of last week's drubbing against Wellington.

"You can see the determination in the boys to put things right against the Fury on Saturday night - it can't come quick enough for us," he said.

"It was obviously a bad day for everyone last week, but the great thing about football is that we have the chance to redeem ourselves this weekend - we have already put it behind us."

Striker Daniel McBreen and defender Robbie Middleby could return for Fury, who overcame Perth 2-1 last weekend.

Finally, Brisbane Roar face Newcastle Jets at Suncorp Stadium with the visitors sweating on the fitness of Tarek Elrich, Adam D'Apuzzo and Ben Kantarovski.
