Scotland fan group want improvement

Scotland fans should build on their role in the dismissal of George Burley by demanding improvement across the game, according to a Tartan Army spokesman.

Burley was sacked today after Scotland fans turned on him during Saturday's 3-0 defeat by Wales and West of Scotland TA spokesman Hamish Husband insisted it was time they stopped accepting "glorious failure".

Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith admitted Burley's departure came after a realisation that expectations of everyone, including the fans, were not being met.

"Scotland fans have spent a lot of money travelling to all these games," Husband said.

"They have always been pretty patient and sometimes been criticised for accepting glorious failure.

"Almost six years ago we went through this with Berti Vogts and weren't prepared to do it again. Scotland fans said enough was enough."

Smith admitted the nation was divided over Burley after handing him a vote of confidence following Scotland's third-placed finish in their World Cup qualifying group.

But there was a growing consensus that his time was up following the first-half collapse in Cardiff.

"It was a decision that many of us thought should have been taken after the Holland game," Husband said.

"The SFA asked us to accept glorious failure when what the Scotland fans should be asking for us is glorious qualification after so long without an appearance in a major finals.

"The qualifying games were less than satisfactory in a relatively easy group.

"The team and the manager failed to ignite the passion of the fans.

"Burley leaves us with few if any memorable memories. Even Berti left us with a 1-0 win over Holland.

"George proved not to have the character or personality to manager at international level. I think that was evident early in the campaign."

Husband added that fan power should become more pervasive across the game.

"It's about time Scotland fans demanded more of the clubs and the SFA," he said.

"We should demand better quality football and footballers from top to bottom.

"The clubs and the SFA are culpable for the mess Scottish football is in. This is not just about the appointment of George Burley, our football is in a mess.

"The fans should be a focus group for proper change in Scottish football."

Meanwhile, Husband believes former manager Walter Smith would have to assure sceptical fans of his commitment should he be willing to take up the post again.

Smith left Scotland for Rangers during the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign but his contract at the debt-ridden Ibrox club expires in January amid uncertainty over the club's future.

"I'm sure many Scotland fans will be unsure about welcoming Walter back," Husband said.

"I think Walter has got to assure them that it would be a long-term commitment and whether he will bring the passion he had three years ago.

"The Scotland fans would have to ask Walter to convince us he really wanted the job."
