Alan ready for Copa battle

Fluminense forward Alan predicts the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana final will be "like a war"

Fluminense look to overturn a four-goal deficit against Liga Deportiva Universitaria in Rio de Janeiro.

The Brazilian team suffered a comprehensive 5-1 defeat in Ecuador last week and must win by four goals at the Maracana to take the tie to penalties, with away goals not taken into consideration in the final.

"It is all or nothing. Wednesday's match will be like a war," said Alan.

Last Sunday, relegation-threatened Fluminense claimed a 4-0 win over Vitoria in the league and both Alan and team-mate Fred are confident their side can repeat that scoreline tomorrow.

"In the Vitoria game, we were inspired," he said.

"On Wednesday, I hope we can score that number of goals again. We must go onto the field with the same attitude. We should score goals in the opening minutes."

Fred added: "It will be quite difficult, but after what it happened, we will never give up so easily.

"We'll fight until the end and do the necessary things to clinch a 4-0 or 5-0 win."

Fluminense defender Dalton missed yesterday's training session with a shoulder injury, but is expected to start.

Liga midfielder Miller Bolanos will not play the final due to a broken toe.

The Ecuadorian outfit defeated Fluminense at the Maracana to win the prestigious Copa Libertadores last year and Claudio Bieler - the Copa Sudamericana's leading scorer with eight goals - is desperate to experience that feeling again.

"The first time it was great for us," he said. "This time, we want to play a good game and bring a new international title to Ecuador.

"We know we have a big lead. We are quite calm, but we know we want the title."

Edison Mendez, who scored a hat-trick in the first leg to move onto seven goals for the tournament, does not expect to be afforded as much space by Fluminense tomorrow as he was last week.

He said: "The ideal thing for us is to avoid the markings they will set and try to find gaps to hurt them."

The winners of the competition will contest the Suruga Bank Championship in Japan against the J. League Cup winners FC Tokyo.
