Asian giants all set for draw

Kashima Antlers and Jeonbuk Motors will await their fate in the AFC Champions League draw to be held later today.

The AFC Champions League Official Draw will be held at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur starting at 4.00HKT.

Kashima won a record third straight J.League title, and seventh in total, when they won 1-0 at Urawa Reds, the 2006 champions and 2007 AFC Champions League winners. Japan striker Shinzoh Kohrogi headed the winner in the 66th minute in front of 53,283 fans at the Saitama Stadium.

Kashima finished with 66 points, two ahead of Kawasaki Frontale, who finished runners-up for the third time in four years.

Frontale beat Kashiwa Reysol 3-2 away and would have won the title, on goal difference, for the first time if the Antlers had not secured three points. Goals by Brazilian forward Juninho, the club's all-time leading scorer, DPR Korea striker Jong Tae-se and captain Kengo Nakamura put Frontale 3-0 up at half-time.

Yasuhito Endo, the newly crowned AFC Player of the Year, scored a brace as third-placed Gamba Osaka, last year's AFC Champions League winners, finished their campaign with a 2-0 win over JEF United Chiba.

All three teams enter today's AFC Champions League draw along with the Emperor's Cup winners, who will be crowned after the final at the National Stadium on January 1.

However, if Kashima, Kawasaki or Gamba win the Emperor's Cup (all three are in this weekend's quarter-finals), Sanfrecce Hiroshima will take Japan's fourth AFC Champions League berth as the fourth-placed team in the J.League.

Jeonbuk Motors, winners of the 2006 AFC Champions League, won their first K-League title when they beat Seongnam Ilhwa 3-1 at home in Sunday's second leg of the playoff final, following last Wednesday's scoreless draw.

In front of 36,246 fans at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium, Brazilian star Eninho scored a first-half brace before K-League top scorer Lee Dong-gook converted a 79th-minute penalty, while Kim Jin-yong bagged a late consolation for the seven-time champions.

Pohang Steelers, who won the AFC Champions League final in Tokyo last month, finished second in the table before losing to Seongnam in the playoff semi-final.

Jeonbuk, Seongnam, Pohang and FA Cup winners Suwon Samsung Bluewings will represent Korea Republic in next year's AFC Champions League.

The 2010 AFC Champions League includes five of the six previous winners, including Saudi Arabian champions Al Ittihad, who won back-to-back in 2004 and 2005 and lost to Pohang in last month's final, and inaugural holders Al Ain of the UAE.

The 2010 AFC Champions League will again feature eight groups of four teams split into West and East zones.
