Striker Andy Carroll will miss Newcastle's derby clash with Middlesbrough after picking up his fifth booking of the season on Saturday.

The 20-year-old picked up the booking during his sided 2-2 draw at Barnsley and will sit out Sunday's Tyne-Tees showdown at St James' Park.

Manager Chris Hughton said: "It's a big blow for us and for Andy, who never wants to miss any game - he especially doesn't want to miss the game with Middlesbrough as he's a local lad.

"He will be a miss but that's what the squad is about."

Carroll returned to the side at Oakwell after being left out of the 2-0 win at Coventry in midweek following his arrest in connection with an allegation of assault.

But Hughton also has Marlon Harewood, Peter Lovenkrands and Nile Ranger at his disposal while midfielder Kevin Nolan took his tally for the season to 10 with his strike at the weekend.
