Ligue 1 Weekend Preview

Marseille coach Didier Deschamps has urged his players to dig deep as they attempt to halt Bordeaux's march to the Ligue 1 title.

Captain Mamadou Niang returned from injury with a bang as his stoppage-time winner secured Marseille a 3-2 Coupe de la Ligue victory at St Etienne last night.

Deschamps' men made hard work of the tie and their weariness will not have been aided by having to return home by road rather than air as originally planned due to strikes.

In contrast Bordeaux have fresh legs after their tie against Le Mans was called off because of the freezing weather.

Deschamps has called for his players not to let their tiredness show.

"It will be a completely different match there," he said. "And we will need even more than against St Etienne.

"First of all we have to recover well because we played on Wednesday while they didn't and will be noticeably fresher than us.

"We have to recover before preparing for Sunday's game in the best way possible."

Bordeaux look on course to successfully defend their Ligue 1 crown and defeat would surely end Marseille's hopes as they currently sit 11 points behind the champions, albeit with a game in hand.

Les Girondins have won eight of their nine games at the Stade Chaban Delmas but Marseille will be boosted by the return of top-scorer Niang, who has been sidelined since the beginning of December.

In-form Lille will hope to take advantage of any mistake from the table-toppers as they play host to Paris St Germain on Saturday.

LOSC, currently second in the standings, are brimming with confidence as they head into the clash on the back of seven-straight victories.

PSG are looking to get back on track after they crashed out of the Coupe de la Ligue to second-division Guingamp last night.

Montpellier are also in need of a boost following a 4-0 humiliation in their rearranged league match at Monaco yesterday.

The newly-promoted outfit will seek to cement their third-place when they welcome struggling Nice.

Meanwhile, Lyon find themselves in the unusual position of sixth in the standings having only won once in their past eight league games and will try to correct that at Nancy.

At the other end of the table Grenoble know they need to win at home to St Etienne if they are to have a realistic chance of avoiding the drop.

Grenoble are nine points off safety and with tough games against Bordeaux, Rennes, Auxerre and Montpellier coming up three points against their relegation rivals is a must.

Victory for Boulogne yesterday would have lifted them level on points with Le Mans and St Etienne on the limits of the relegation zone but they were held to a goalless draw at home to Sochaux and will be desperate to snatch at least a point against fifth-placed Auxerre.

Le Mans are looking to boost their own survival hopes at home to Lorient.

Elsewhere, Monaco and Rennes host Sochaux and Lens respectively while Toulouse travel to Valenciennes.
