Rennes 1-2 Lille
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a late winner at Rennes to keep Lille in the top three in Ligue 1. winner
Rudi Garcia's side have been in brilliant form and were hoping to put the seal on another impressive week after their Europa League win over Fenerbahce on Thursday.
Pierre-Alain Frau's opener was swiftly cancelled out by Jerome Leroy and that was the way it stayed until a minute from time when Aubameyang tucked home the winner.
Rennes have a very good home record but it was the visitors who struck first after 10 minutes when Frau, the match-winner against Fenerbahce, drove to the edge of the area and beat Nicolas Douchez with a low shot.
But, after Sylvain Marveaux had tested Mickael Landreau from a free-kick, Rennes did find their equaliser, Leroy putting the gloss on a fine move in the 26th minute with a neat finish.
Lille suffered a blow seven minutes before the break when playmaker Gervinho was injured in a challenge with Carlos Bocanegra and could not continue.
But they came within inches of taking the lead again moments later when Adil Rami saw his shot smack the bar and they finished the half with substitute Ludovic Obraniak testing Douchez.
Both sides pushed for a winner in the second half, with Frau hitting the side-netting and Leroy and Abdou Kader Mangane both seeing efforts saved by Landreau.
But it was Lille who make the crucial breakthrough in the 89th minute. Eden Hazard found Stephane Dumont and his shot was pushed out by Douchez but only as far as Aubameyang, who made no mistake.
And there was still time for the striker to be denied another goal by Douchez as Lille secured the three points that took them back above Lyon and Marseille and to within a point of Montpellier.
