Ghotbi quits as Persepolis coach
Persepolis coach Afshin Ghotbi has resigned from his position, less than a fortnight after guiding the Tehran outfit to the Pro League crown.
Ghotbi, an Iranian-American, succeeded to get the silverware in his first stint in Iran. He joined Persepolis after Korea Republic’s third-place finish in the AFC Asian Cup 2007 where he served as assistant coach."After talking it over with his family, Ghotbi officially told us that he does not want to remain in Iran any longer and to work with Persepolis," Persepolis director Habib Kashani told ISNA.
"The reason for Ghotbi's departure is family circumstances and has nothing to do with financial differences," Kashani said.
Persepolis clinched the title on the last day of the season on May 17 with a thrilling 2-1 win over rivals Sepahan, marking the club's first Pro League title in six years.
During his one year in charge, Ghotbi endeared himself to Iranian football fans with his tactical thinking, smart dressing and animated comments to the media.
