English nPower Championship

Winston Reid was West Ham's unlikely match-winner as the npower Championship leaders beat derby rivals Millwall 2-1 despite playing almost the entire match with 10 men.

The New Zealand defender hit only his second goal for the Hammers moments after Liam Trotter had cancelled out Carlton Cole's first-half header.

The drama in today's early match came after Hammers captain Kevin Nolan was shown a straight red card for a nasty two-footed lunge on Jack Smith with just nine minutes on the clock.

Robert Snodgrass scored his sixth goal in as many away games to give Leeds a 1-0 half-time lead at Bristol City.

Leeds sacked manager Simon Grayson this week and, with Neil Redfearn in caretaker charge, spent much of the first half at Ashton Gate on the back foot.

However they went in front five minutes before the break when Snodgrass finished a sweeping passing move.

To make matters worse for the home side, James Wilson was sent off for a professional foul on Ross McCormack on the stroke of half-time.

Third-placed Cardiff were struggling to make up ground on leaders West Ham as they ended the first half against Blackpool deadlocked at 0-0.

With second-placed Southampton facing Birmingham in the evening kick-off, Malky Mackay's side were given the first chance to respond.

However, Ian Holloway's in-form Seasiders were a match for their opponents at the Cardiff City Stadium, and it took an excellent by David Marshall from visiting forward Nouha Dicko keep the scores level.

Paul Taylor capitalised on some slack defending to give Peterborough an early lead at Burnley to put Darren Ferguson's side on course for a first victory since Boxing Day.

It could have been worse for Eddie Howe's Clarets as Posh striker David Ball rattled the woodwork moments after the opening goal.

Jay-Emmanuel Thomas followed up his midweek double against West Ham with a splendid volley to give Ipswich the lead against Coventry, but Sammy Clingan levelled from the penalty spot after Tommy Smith handled.

Watford took the lead against Barnsley in spectacular fashion when Sean Murray's free-kick spun up off the defensive wall for John Eustace to plant an acrobatic overhead kick beyond Tykes goalkeeper Luke Steele.

Brighton midfielder Matthew Sparrow spurned a one-on-one opportunity against Leicester as the game at the Amex Stadium remained goalless, as did Middlesbrough's clash with Crystal Palace on Teesside.

Doncaster's match with Reading and Hull's trip to Portsmouth fell foul of the weather.

William Hill Scottish Cup

Goals from Georgios Samaras and Scott Brown eased Celtic to an impressive 2-0 victory over Inverness in their William Hill Scottish Cup fifth-round tie at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.

Both sides took time to come to terms with the windy conditions but the pendulum swung the visitors' way when Greece striker Samaras fired high past Jonny Tuffey in the 33rd minute to give them the interval lead.

In the 67th minute, after Caley defender David Proctor had conceded a penalty for a foul on Gary Hooper, Celtic skipper Brown slotted in the spot-kick for his third goal in three games to take the holders into Monday's draw at Hampden.

The result extended the Hoops' domestic winning run to 15 games and, being one point clear of Rangers at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League and in the final of the Scottish Communities League Cup final, kept them on course for the domestic treble.

A first-half Eoin Doyle strike earned Hibernian a place in the last eight as they beat Kilmarnock 1-0 in another all-SPL tie.

The Irishman's goal was just reward for a fine display by the home side during an opening period which also saw an effort by James McPake ruled out and Tom Soares go close.

Paul Heffernan fired the visitors' best chance into the arms of the recalled Graham Stack.

Motherwell booked their place in the next round with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Morton at Fir Park.

Stuart McCall's men stunned their Scottish First Division opponents as they raced into a 5-0 half-time advantage.

Tom Hateley netted directly from a corner before Jamie Murphy, Shaun Hutchinson, Henrik Ojamaa and Nicky Law all netted for the hosts as the tie was all but decided before the interval.

Murphy then blasted home his second midway through the second half to add to Morton's woes and complete a one-sided scoreline.

Aberdeen had to come from behind to earn a replay as they drew 1-1 against Queen of the South.

Scott McLaughlin netted against the run of play after 54 minutes to give the Doonhamers hope of pulling off a shock against their top-flight rivals, who have fallen victim to a number of cup upsets in recent seasons.

However Scott Vernon scrambled the ball home after 67 minutes following a long Kari Arnason throw-in to keep alive the Dons' hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

First Division outfit Ross County also forced a replay against SPL opposition as they drew 1-1 with St Mirren - but only after Richard Brittain missed a stoppage-time penalty.

The County captain had put his side ahead from the spot five minutes before half-time, only for the effort to be cancelled out within three minutes by a headed goal from St Mirren striker Steven Thompson.

Brittain had a golden opportunity to score a stoppage-time winner after Mark Corcoran was brought down by Lee Mair, but this time he sent his penalty sailing well over the bar.

The day's other scheduled fifth-round game - between Ayr United and Falkirk - was postponed.

English npower League One

Sheffield Wednesday moved into second place in npower League One thanks to a 2-1 win over Yeovil at Hillsborough today.

Wednesday came from behind to close the gap on leaders Charlton, whose game against Rochdale was postponed due to a frozen pitch, to seven points.

Yeovil went in front four minutes before the break thanks to Jonathan Obika's left-footed strike before Jermaine Johnson equalised in the 57th minute.

Reda Johnson then struck home with 10 minutes left on the clock to seal the win for the south Yorkshire club which saw them leapfrog Huddersfield into second place.

The Terriers dropped points at home after they drew 1-1 at home to MK Dons.

Jamie McCombe headed Huddersfield into the lead on the stroke of half-time from the six-yard line when he got on to the end of Kallum Higginbotham's cross.

However, Stephen Gleeson's 30-yard free-kick levelled the score in the 62nd minute with both sides unable to find another breakthrough in the freezing conditions.

Carlisle came from behind to beat Chesterfield 2-1 at Brunton Park as they continued to push for a play-off place.

Drew Talbot put Chesterfield in front in the 16th minute before Ben Parker's header levelled the score midway through the second half.

Francois Zoko sealed the win for the home side with six minutes left on the clock to keep them in seventh place, now level on points with Stevenage in the final play-off place.

In the only other League One game that survived the big freeze, Wycombe beat Tranmere 2-1 at Adams Park.

Adam McGurk fired Tranmere into the lead from 25 yards after just five minutes, but two goals in seven minutes proved to be enough for the home side to take all three points.

Matthew Whichelow headed the equaliser for Wycombe in the 22nd minute before Gareth Ainsworth poked home from close range to seal the win.

The only game to survive the weather in League Two was the match between Plymouth and Southend at Home Park which visitors won 2-0.

Southend took the lead within a minute of the kick-off when Michael Timlin struck home from the centre of the area and David Martin doubled the visitors' advantage 10 minutes before the break when he poked home from close range.

The result moved the Shrimpers into second place, above Swindon, whose game against Burton Albion joined the rest of the league's fixtures in being postponed due to a frozen pitch.

English npower League Two

Southend spurned a golden opportunity to return to the top of the table, conceding twice in the last five minutes of a 2-2 draw at Plymouth in the only League Two game to beat the freeze on Saturday.

The Shrimpers seemed to be coasting at 2-0 up going into the final stages of the match, but Nick Chadwick reduced arrears for Argyle before on-loan debutant Alex MacDonald levelled.

Chadwick found the net from 20 yards while MacDonald pounced from close range, after fellow substitute Joe Lennox's shot rebounded off the post, to secure a vital point for the Pilgrims.

The late comeback came after Southend enjoyed a flying start, as Michael Timlin prospered following a defensive mix-up to score after just 59 seconds.

The visitors' joy was doubled in the 34th minute when David Martin crashed the ball in from close range after Liam Dickinson's shot was deflected but Plymouth would have the final say with their two late efforts.

Swiss Super League

Lucerne could only close the gap on Super League leaders Basle by a point after they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to FC Zurich.

Jahmir Hyka fired Lucerne into the lead in the 37th minute, but Josip Drmic equalised six minutes after the break to earn the visitors a share of the spoils.

The draw left second-placed Lucerne six points off Basle, who have a game in hand.

Turkish Super Lig

Galatasaray came from behind to beat Gaziantepspor 2-1 and extend their lead at the top of the Super Lig table to six points.

Struggling Gaziantepspor claimed an unlikely lead when Ivelin Popov netted after 50 minutes.

Gala took just three minutes to level, though, through Necati Ates, before Sweden striker Johan Elmander scored the winner after 66 minutes.

Fourth-placed Trabzonspor tripped up at Antalyaspor, losing 2-1.

Brazilian forward Tita won the game for the hosts with a 76th-minute penalty after Mehmet Boyraz's third-minute opener had been cancelled out by Mustafa Yumlu after 19 minutes.

Greek Superleague

Panathinaikos' six-match Superleague winning streak came to an end as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Levadiakos.

Substitute Pashalis Melissas scored in the 83rd minute, three minutes after coming on, to seal the win and leave Olympiacos able to cut Pana's lead to two points if they can beat PAOK in Salonika on Sunday.

OFI Crete moved clear into fifth place as Fotis Papoulis' goal proved decisive at mid-table Ergotelis, while in the day's other game Giannina were 2-1 winners at Kerkyra to move four points clear of the bottom three.

Giannina's goals came in the first half through Ioannis Zaradoukas (20) and Leandro Becerra (42) before Kerkyra pulled one back through Christos Kalantzis (55) and Giannina had Andi Lila sent off in the 69th minute.

Dutch Eredivisie

Bart Schenkeveld scored twice to give Excelsior a 3-1 win in their relegation showdown with VVV-Venlo and move them off the foot of the table.

Schenkeveld scored either side of half-time to put the hosts in control and Darren Maatsen made the points safe with a third.

Yanic Wildschut grabbed a consolation for VVV, who had Brian Linssen sent off when 1-0 down, but it could not prevent them falling to bottom spot.

The win moved Excelsior up to third from bottom, four points from safety.

Nicky Hofs' first-half goal earned Vitesse Arnhem a 1-0 win at home to NAC Breda.

Hofs finished off an excellent team move for his first goal of the season in the 19th minute.

Alexander Buttner should have doubled the lead just after the hour mark, but saw his penalty saved by Jelle ten Rouwelaar, while NAC had Anthony Lurling sent off at the death.

Saturday's other game between ADO Den Haag and AZ Alkmaar was postponed due to a frozen pitch at the Kyocera Stadion.

Paris St Germain beat Evian 3-1 on Saturday to stay three points clear of closest challengers Montpellier at the top of Ligue 1.

Victory also maintained their 100% record under new coach Carlo Ancelotti but it did not come easily as Evian went ahead just before half-time when Cedric Cambon scored.

PSG stormed back in the second period as Nene scored twice, the second from the penalty spot, and Kevin Gameiro wrapped up the win two minutes from the end of normal time.

A freak goal from Geoffrey Dernis earned Montpellier a 1-0 win over Brest.

He scored the winner in the 41st minute, as a volley from team-mate Remy Cabella struck him on the back and went past goalkeeper Steeve Elana.

Brest's Abdoul Sissoko, on as a substitute for his Ligue 1 debut, was sent off in the 90th minute for a two-footed challenge on Romain Pitau.

Bordeaux got back to winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 home win over 10-man Toulouse.

The in-form hosts were held to a goalless draw at Evian last weekend but were quickly on course for a fifth successive home win after Jussie netted in the first minute.

The points were then effectively wrapped up before half-time as Ludovic Obraniak added a second before Toulouse had Moussa Sissoko sent off.

Lorient's Ligue 1 game at St Etienne lasted just 10 minutes before a frozen pitch forced the referee to call the players off.

The match had already been brought forward four hours to a 1400 kick-off in a bid to beat the cold snap, but the icy conditions meant the match was postponed.

Valenciennes claimed their first Ligue 1 away win of the season at the 12th attempt as first-half goals by Renaud Cohade and Gael Danic secured a 2-1 success over Dijon.

The result took the visitors above Dijon in the table and meant the hosts, who scored a late consolation through Gregory Thil, have now won just one of their past seven league matches.

Nancy and Rennes battled out a goalless draw at the Stade Marcel Picot in a match brought forward four hours due to adverse weather.

Substitute Esmael Goncalves netted a late equaliser to deny in-form Ajaccio and earn bottom club Nice a 1-1 draw - only their third away point of the season.

Promoted Ajaccio looked on course to record a fifth successive Ligue 1 victory, having previously taken only four points from 12 games, thanks to Eduardo's 57th-minute penalty.

Goncalves had other ideas, though, and he popped up in the 85th minute to salvage his side a draw with a close-range finish following a defensive mix-up.
