Comment: Scolari will succeed

Tottenham Hotspur fan Kelvin Leong, puts his hand up and admits that he is in awe of another London side. Chelsea.

When it comes to managers in new jobs, more often than not, a good start and a few wins to kick things off is fundamental to what lies ahead.

Set the bar high at the start of your tenure and the players, fans and directors will fall in line with your orders.

One only has to look closely at how former Portugal coach, Luis Felipe Scolari, has become a Stamford Bridge favourite to understand this simple logic.

Scolari started off his life as Chelsea manager with a bad taste in his mouth after news of his appointment was leaked out midway at Euro 2008, just as he was masterminding a Portuguese assault on the European crown.

He duly took charge of the proceedings, tidied up the mess left behind by the press officers and stated his intent. No more talk about Chelsea until Portugal's European adventure came to an end.

The press respected his wishes and he got on with his job.

Once his Portuguese love affair ended, he made his way down to London and had a quiet start, sheepishly going about his transfer dealings.

Like a Chinese emperor of old surrounding himself with his most trusted warriors, old favourite Deco - known to be Scolari's ‘brains' on the field - was signed almost immediately upon his arrival.

Then it was down to the drawing board to map out how his wanted his men to play.

On the eve of his team kicking off the new Premier League season against highly fancied Portsmouth, he came out and made a statement: ‘Win or be killed!'

He knew his head was on the chopping block from the moment he signed on the dotted line. Deliver silverware or else.

That one bold statement was his way of setting the bar for his players.

And how his charges delivered when the day of reckoning came.

Looking physically fit, the men in blue outran, outfought and outplayed their opponents from the start. All four goals scored down to the way they hustled Pompey into submission.

The storybook ending came when Deco, his trusted midfield general, capped off the fantastic display by netting the fourth and final goal.

Scolari and his general have arrived. No wonder Chelsea fans are purring with delight.
