Carragher hits out at Anfield owners
Former England defender Jamie Carragher has jeapordised his Liverpool future after criticizing the club's owners.
Carragher, who is set to feature for Rafa Bentitez's side against Manchester United on Saturday, believes American duo Tom Hicks and George Gillett have only taken control of the Anfield boardroom in a bid to improve their bank balances.
In a startling outburst, Carragher refused to pull any punches, as he listed the woes that Hicks and Gillett have brought to Anfield.
"We'd sold Liverpool to two ruthless businessmen who saw us as a money-making opportunity," Carragher says in his soon to be released autobiography.
"They didn't buy Liverpool as an act of charity. They wanted to buy us because the planned stadium offered a chance to generate tons of cash."
Carragher also revealed his horror with the decision to put Liverpool's accounts in the red - despite the Americans initially saying they would do nothing of the sort - and the reaction to Benitez's demand for transfer money after the 2007 Champions League final defeat.
"Breaking this (debt) vow set the first alarm bells ringing, the embarrassing continual changing of the stadium plans was irritating too," he said.
"These words sparked a chain reaction that brought problems into the open, almost cost (Benitez) his job, riled Liverpool's owners into an ill-fated meeting with Jurgen Klinsmann, and ended Hicks' and Gillett's honeymoon relationship with the Kop."
