16th October 1954

For those who believe the Chelsea vs Manchester United football rivalry is a recent phenomenon, think again. In a series that goes back over a century, the most incredible match of all saw Champions-elect, Chelsea - known as Drake's Ducklings - and a young United team under Matt Busby (known as the Busby Babes) produce an 11-goal thriller in October 1954.

In the days of huge crowds, rosettes and flat caps, United went to Chelsea and recorded a remarkable 6-5 win in front of close to 67,000 fans. One player from each side scored a hat-trick. Chelsea debutant, Seamus O'Connell, plucked from the amateur ranks just that season, and United's Dennis Violett. Tommy Taylor with 2, and Jackie Blanchflower added to the United tally.

This was a fourth straight defeat for the Blues at the start of the season, but they would recover to win the first ever title in their 50th year. The next would take another 50 to arrive. Their last match of the season was at Old Trafford where the home team - in an act that would be repeated 50 years later - formed a guard of honour for the team from London.

As Champions, Chelsea were invited to be the first English team to play in the European Cup. The Football Association banned Chelsea from doing so. When United won the Title a year later, Busby ignored the FA and entered his team in the European Cup setting in motion the legend of "The Babes", and United.

For those who believe in coincidences, 6-5 was the penalty shoot-out scoreline in last seasons Champions League Final in Moscow - again won by the team from Manchester.
