Joe: Magpies will not be relegated

Magpies boss, Joe Kinnear has claimed there is 'no danger whatsoever' that Newcastle will go down this season.

The new interim chief watched from the stands as Newcastle fell to a home defeat to Blackburn on Saturday; a result which leaves the crisis club second from bottom of the Premier League.

With owner Mike Ashley desperate to sell the club amid vociferous criticism from the Toon faithful and the players desperately short of confidence, talk of the drop has surfaced at St James' Park.

However, Kinnear, whose appointment was not universally well received, claims such talk is nonsense at such an early stage of the season.

"Big teams have gone down in the past but, no, Newcastle won't go down at all," said Kinnear.

"No danger whatsoever."

Kinnear concedes he is in a no-win situation in taking on a job a number of other candidates turned down, over fears that living in the shadow cast by Kevin Keegan only reduces the chances of making a success of the role.

On Saturday the former Wimbledon and Luton chief bristled when having his credentials questioned by the press in attendance, before launching a tirade over how he has been treated.

"I know I am going to get crucified but I will take it on the chin and get on with the job," he is quoted in the Daily Mirror.

"I think I am bright. I have had a good football career. I am no mug, you know what I mean?

"But because I was associated with Wimbledon for so long, and turned over people for so long, the hatred starts.

"It is the same up here. I have been branded a Cockney. How am I Cockney?

"I was born and reared in Ireland, and played for Ireland.

"Every second there is always someone who wants to stab you in the back.

"Every second I turn a corner here it is Kevin Keegan. What else can I say?

"There is always someone to carry the can. What I can say is that there will be no more players coming in.

"I can say that for sure. Ashley has made a statement. He will not be investing any more money."
