Gerrard not a City boy
Dirk Kuyt has claimed that Steven Gerrard will not be joining Man City, even as Liverpool take on the Sky Blues.
The Liverpool captain is rumoured to be on top of City's shopping list as the Premier League rich boys wait to spend the cash in the coming January transfer window.
However, Reds team-mate Kuyt is certain that the heart and soul of Liverpool FC, like the rest of the team, will not abandon Anfield for the Sky Blues that have not won anything significant in the last 30 years.
"I don't think any player from here would go to City, because Liverpool is a much bigger club," the Dutchman said. "I'm in my third season here now and I enjoy it every day. I know how big this club is, not only in England but all over the world, and that's really important for all the players here."
"Liverpool is Stevie. So, of course, it would be very difficult to buy him. I don't think he would ever leave here for City," added Kuyt.
It has been well documented that Stevie-G, an excellent product of the Melwood academy assembly line, was close to sealing the deal that would have brought him to Stamford Bridge in 2004, after a certain Russian owner took over the club.
The rumour mill is churning out a similar tale this season, with Abu Dhabi United's wealth exceeding even those of Roman Abramovich's.
"I don't know what value you would put on (Gerrard) but it would be a lot of money. So it won't be easy for City, especially if they want to sign the really big players," said Kuyt. "It's possible. But if you want those already playing for big clubs, that's the difficult thing."
It would be unthinkable for Rafa Benitez to even entertain the idea of selling his talismanic captain, whose value to the club exceeds the touchlines of the pitch.
The Reds skipper blasted in his 100th goal for the club with a thunderbolt of a shot from a freekick in Liverpool's Champions League victory over Dutch side PSV.
"It's a great achievement for a midfielder to get 100 goals," concluded Kuyt. "He's a great player. Now we just have to make sure we keep going as a team."
