Cole vows to right some wrongs
Chelsea dynamo Joe Cole has revealed that he is eager to erase memories of the club's trophy drought last season.
The west London side came within a whisker of claiming a double last time out, but were beaten to both the Premier League and Champions League titles by bitter rivals Manchester United. To add insult to injury, Chelsea also lost out in the final of the Carling Cup when they were beaten by Tottenham Hotspur.
Not surprisingly, England international Cole wants Chelsea to turn those negatives in to positives as they strive for glory on all fronts this campaign.
"With football, as in life, you are going to get ups and downs. The ups wouldn't be so sweet without the downs, of course, but after what happened last year... well, if we can win trophies this year, it will make it all the sweeter," Cole told Setanta Sports.
"I know you can't compare it with things that happen to people in everyday life, but that [dressing room] was just the worst place to be," he said, reflecting on the European final loss in Moscow.
"We have to use the feelings we suffered that night to go on and try to win it this time. We were on the verge of winning so many trophies."
The lack of trophies saw Avram Grant leave Stamford Bridge and heralded the arrival of former Brazil and Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari. So far at least, Cole is delighted by the Brazilian's input, with the competition for places at Chelsea also appealing to the talented 26-year-old.
"The manager definitely wants us to play good football, keep the ball down and pass it about... But ultimately, you want to win. We can't play like Brazil all the time - not even Brazil can do that," he said
"I wouldn't have it (the competition for places) any other way. It helps you, it pushes you on, keeps your mind sharp and focused."
"Deco is probably the best player I've played with. He should go down as one of the best midfielders of his generation, for sure. He's fantastic on the ball, he's got everything."
