BPL Heroes and Zeroes 11
Ahead of this weekend's Premier League action, Eugene YS Han takes a look at the winners and losers last time out.
HEROES
Chelsea
Since the defeat to Liverpool, Chelsea have responded by being almost unstoppable in the league - scoring eight goals without reply in two games. Nicolas Anelka also put paid to the premature talk of his demise by getting four goals. And despite a crippling injury list, the Blues have retaken the initiative after the Liverpool set-back to climb back to the top of the table.
Geovanni
The sky is the limit for this 28-year-old midfielder whose reputation in the Barclays Premier League is increasing by the minute. Although Hull fell gallantly at Manchester United, the Tigers have been a breath of fresh air with their positive attacking play. Geovanni has been at the centre of the everything that is good at the KC stadium right now. Given a free role against the Red Devils, the Brazilian gave last season's meanest defence the most demanding test yet this season. As long as he stays injury free, Hull are free to dream of Europe.
Tottenham
Lucky or not, Tottenham have made a remarkable comeback since Harry Redknapp's appointment with seven points from three games. Although they have ‘regained' bottom spot, no thanks to results from elsewhere, one can sense a new wave of optimism at Spurs. They are White Hart Shame no more. For more on Tottenham, click here.
Rory Delap
His throw-ins have directly and indirectly led to seven goals for Stoke City. And teams are still finding it hard to defend against Delap's missiles, with his throw-ins more effective than Stoke's corners. Delap's assists have become so high profile that there is talk of the Irishman earning a recall to the Republic of Ireland national team under Giovanni Trappatoni. Delap has publicly dismissed those speculation but surely the defender is privately hoping to play for his country again? His unusual expertise might be useful on the international stage - teams in the BPL have found it tough to defend against him. National teams will be no different.
Emile Heskey
Congratulations to the England international who scored his 100th Premier League goal in the 2-1 win at Portsmouth.
ZEROES
Liverpool
High-flying Liverpool fell back down to earth after slipping on a Spurs banana skin. According to ESPN STAR Sports football analyst Steve McMahon, Liverpool actually played very well at Tottenham but their failure to get a second goal doomed the Reds to defeat. Perhaps Liverpool's luck ran out at White Hart Lane, and they simply got what they deserved. The Reds will face a less demanding fixture list in November with no meetings against the top six sides. The worry is that Liverpool will not play with the same intensity they showed against the Top Two against the lesser lights of the BPL. The Merseysiders have found it hard to score goals in recent games so Fernando Torres' return from injury couldn't come any sooner.
Arsene Wenger
With all due respect to Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager has done wonders for the club and established them as one of the most entertaining sides in the footballing world. But recent results, especially this season, have indicated that maybe, just maybe, Wenger has ran out of ideas. Arsenal were not outplayed by Stoke last weekend, but they were out-fought, out-thought and out-foxed by the Potters. If Wenger doesn't address his team's shortcomings soon, the Arsenal board might even overlook his deity status at the Emirates and cast him out of the club.
Man City
They were perhaps a tad unlucky to concede the first goal to Bolton but Manchester City did not do enough to win as well. Last Sunday's latest upset means City have won just once in their last six matches. The pressure was on Bolton's manager Gary Megson before that game but now it's firmly on Mark Hughes. With so much expectation placed on Man City's shoulders after the takeover, Hughes knows any defeats to less illustrious teams will prove to be fatal.
West Ham
The Hammers are winless in their last five matches, and as a result West Ham are nervously looking over their shoulders. Only four points separate bottom side Tottenham from the Hammers and another crazy BPL weekend could see them sink quickly into the relegation quagmire. Gianfranco Zola has not experienced a relegation fight in England before and that could count against him when the going gets tough at Upton Park.
