Hughes could face the sack

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes is on the brink at the club after his side crashed to a 2-1 loss at Tottenham.

Hughes now faces an uncertain future at the club following their home defeat to Spurs on Sunday.

According to The Sun, sources within the club have revealed that the Welshman might be replaced before the January transfer window.

There have been talks of a dressing room revolt against Hughes - with the likes of Robinho, Elano and Jo reportedly unhappy with his management style and tactics.

The club's mega-rich Arab owners want Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho to take over at City. However, the former Chelsea boss is unlikely to take up the offer having only joined the Italian club in the summer.

A source close to the owners revealed to The Sun: "(Mark) Hughes has not got long. Even if he had beaten Spurs his job was in jeopardy - now losing has taken him to the edge."

Hughes and the club's owners have also clashed over the transfer targets during the January transfer window. The Arabs want him to splash the cash on big name signings while Hughes is looking at players such as Blackburn's Roque Santa Cruz.

Despite their differences and his job being on the line, Hughes insists he has the full backing of the Arab owners.

Hughes told The People: "No one is immune from the sack.

"But all we are trying to do is build a club and it won't happen overnight.

"The team finished eighth last year and we want to be better than that this year - hopefully we will.

"The owners are very calm about things and I don't think they are the types to have a knee-jerk reaction to bad results.

"Everyone else is a bit hysterical about what we are trying to do and putting expectations on us even before we have the benefit of going into the market to get the players that we obviously need.

"This is a long-term project and the owners understand the team isn't going to be challenging immediately.

"Their aim is that sometime in the future we will be challenging for the top honours but it won't happen after the events of one day in the transfer window when we bought Robinho. The owners are realistic in their aspirations and haven't set me any targets.
