Football's unsung heroes!

Football's unsung heroes!

espnstar.com goes behind the scenes to reveal the players who create the goals but almost never get the glory.

Question - More often than not, a player who has just scored a goal always points a finger and runs up to a fellow teammate to celebrate. Who is that teammate?

Answer - The man who provided him with the crucial touch to send him through for his moment of glory.

It is important for a team to have a top goal-poacher who can score goals for fun but ask any manager and they will tell you, the key player for them is one who can make that killer pass also known as an assist.

What is the point of having an Alan Shearer or a Ruud van Nistelrooy leading the line if you fail to pick them out for a chance at goal.

So who has been the most efficient player in the Barclays Premier League this season when it comes to finding their teammates in front of goal?

Kelvin Leong gives you the top ten assist-makers in the Premier League.

Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal) - 6

The striker from Togo leads the line for Arsene Wenger's sleek passing side but the team's style of play means that he can play the role of creator or goalscorer at any one point in a game.

Dimitar Berbatov (Manchester United) - 6

The Bulgarian hitman joined Sir Alex Ferguson's side from Tottenham Hotspur and has made an immediate impact not through his goals but more from his intelligent play. He lures defenders out of position and with just one turn or flick, releases his fellow attackers for an open look at goal.

Florent Malouda (Chelsea) - 5

The much maligned winger from Chelsea has seen more playing time under new coach, Luis Felipe Scolari than his predecessors. Malouda has rewarded the Brazilian coach with some quick-thinking and has constantly found a red-hot Nicolas Anelka for the winning goal.

Mikel Arteta (Everton) - 4

European Champions, Spain, have a long list of playmakers in their ranks and that is probably the reason Arteta has failed to break into the national side. Blessed with pinpoint accuracy on his crosses and a powerful shot, Everton's chief creator is arguably David Moyes' most important member at Goodison Park.

Joe Cole (Chelsea) - 4

The former West Ham trainee has been unable to hold down a permanent place in the Chelsea starting lineup but when selected, the England midfielder always delivers the goods. His eye for that inch-perfect through ball is one of the London side's most deadly weapons.

Rory Delap (Stoke City) - 4

Delap could very well be an Olympic gold medalist in Beijing if he had chosen shot-putt as a career instead of football. If Stoke City ever manages to avoid relegation, it will all be down to this man who's four assists all came from his massive long throw-in and not from his legs!

Robbie Keane (Liverpool) - 4

Keano has always been one of the most intelligent players in the Premier League. He always looks for the open player and rarely wastes a pass or gives the ball back to the opposition. Playing alongside world-class strikers like Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuyt gives him even more options for that killer pass.

Steed Malbranque (Sunderland) - 4

Touted as the next Zinedine Zidane, Malbranque has shown glimpses of capability throughout his English career at Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and finally Sunderland. His slaloming runs into opposing territory makes him elusive for defenders and his cut-backs into the six yard box has found the Sunderland forwards like Djibril Cisse and Kenwyne Jones on many occasions.

Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) - 4

Rooney was brought to Old Trafford for his goalscoring prowess but Ferguson obviously saw his abilities to switch positions as a huge asset to his team. Being able to come up with a handful of assists in a team full of talented passers outlines his all-round ability and class.

Ashley Young (Aston Villa) - 4

Many pundits and fans have put their hopes on this young man solving England's problematic left midfield position. A great dribbler who has the natural instinct of finding an open teammate, Fabio Capello could do with his services at the next World Cup in South Africa.
