BPL Heroes and Zeroes 14
Eugene YS Han thinks Arsenal's William Gallas should never play for the Gunners again after his latest out-burst.
Heroes
The best of the rest
As Steve McMahon pointed out, the BPL has become one of the most competitive seasons ever. The Big Four failed to score on the same day for the first time since 1992. Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United came through goalless bores while Arsenal were given a good walloping by Manchester City to plunge them deeper into crisis. The Gunners may be financially sound off-the-field but on it they were a shambles.
Shay Given
Chelsea have been irresistible in recent months and their much-vaulted attack was heavily favoured to give Newcastle a good spanking. Instead, Newcastle parked their coach, or some say city centre, in front of their goal and held out for a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea had 14 shots on target and Newcastle's custodian Shay Given saved them all. The Republic of Ireland international's qualities also led to Giovanni Trappatoni into recommending him to Serie A clubs. Arsenal were also linked with Given before the start of this season so it would not be a surprise if Newcastle choose to cash in on their most bankable asset during the January transfer window.
Manchester City
Troubled Arsenal were there for the taking and Manchester City took full advantage to register the most convincing win last weekend. Robinho and Stephen Ireland took advantage of some hesitant, or some would say school boy, defending to score City's goals. Arsenal had earned a reputation for playing pretty football but it was City who, at times, passed the ball more elegantly than their visitors.
Stephen Ireland
The Man City midfielder has been on fire in the last two games - scoring three goals to total six goals in 14 games for his club. It is no mean feat to gain a first-team place in City's midfield considering the presence of Elano and Dietmar Hamann. But Ireland has stepped up to the plate in great fashion and he is playing almost like a 'Brazilian'. Ireland coach, Trappatoni, will be going all out to woo him back into the international fold.
Tottenham
The Harry Redknapp revolution continues at White Hart Lane after their hard-fought victory over Blackburn Rovers to lift themselves out of the relegation mire. Aaron Lennon in particular was impressive and it shows how Spurs are using their players more effectively under Harry. Now if only they could find a decent goalkeeper in January.
Zeroes
Will.i.am Gallas
Just as John Dykes mentioned on First Edition, many people thought Arsenal got a great bargain in William Gallas in exchange for the money-minded Ashley Cole. And how the tables have turned. Gallas has proved to be a liability on and off the field. We wonder if his latest tirade was targeted in time with the release of his book. He should know that Arsenal, like most of the big clubs, have zero tolerance towards kiss-and-tell footballers. Just ask Ruud van Nistelrooy, Roy Keane, Djbril Cisse and David Bentley - all of which publicly addressed their grievances to those who care to listen. Bentley in particular questioned the number of foreign players in Arsenal - while still with them of course. Bentley was soon driven off to another club. Some Arsenal supporters, especially those who consider it sacrilegious for Gallas to wear Dennis Bergkamp's number, would not mind seeing the back of Gallas. Some would even offer him a ride back to France.
The 'Big Four'
It was as you were for Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea after all three clubs recorded no-score draws. United struggled to finish off Aston Villa who avoided defeat against their visitors for the first time in 12 games. Fulham nullified the impotent attack of Fernando Torres and Robbie Keane, adding further fuel that both strikers can't play together in the same team. As for Chelsea, the Blues did everything but score at Stamford Bridge. Arsenal lost again, this time at ambitious Manchester City led by twinkle-toes Robinho and the clinical Stephen Ireland who is rapidly earning a reputation for being the next 'Paul Scholes'. This proves no club can take another for granted now - this season is just getting more and more interesting.
Arsene Wenger
He should have seen it coming. Arsenal were a team full of talented youngsters but there was no true leader. Cesc Fabregas is a great player but he is no leader. Arsenal have no experienced old hand to guide the young guns along when the going gets tough. The club is crying out for a leader in the mould of Tony Adams or Patrick Vieira. Even Martin Keown and Dennis Bergkamp were figure-heads whom the youngsters looked up to. Ever since Thierry Henry took over the armband, the captaincy seemed trivial to Wenger who was obsessed with playing beautiful football. The sooner the Frenchman wakes up from the idea that leadership is something that's unquantifiable and something that's earned, the better for Arsenal's future.
Djbril Cisse
The Sunderland striker should be held responsible for Sunderland's defeat to an unimpressive West Ham side at the Stadium of Light. Cisse had eight chances at goal and none of them even troubled the West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green. Even Valon Behrami's incredible miss from six yards will do little to lift Cisse off the worse finisher of the weekend. Sunderland have struggled for goals this season and only bottom-of-the-table West Brom have scored less goals than Sunderland. More food for thought for Roy Keane then.
