Jermain Defoe's return to Tottenham from Portsmouth did not go exactly to plan as his side found themselves hanging on at the end of a goalless first half against Wigan at the JJB Stadium.
After an encouraging start the visitors struggled to keep the Latics at bay.
Amr Zaki narrowly headed wide from a Ryan Taylor free-kick and goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes saved from Wilson Palacios and Emile Heskey.
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp named striker Jermain Defoe in the starting line-up against Wigan at the JJB Stadium after he completed his return to the club from Portsmouth earlier in the week.

Preview:
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp named striker Jermain Defoe in the starting line-up against Wigan at the JJB Stadium after he completed his return to the club from Portsmouth earlier in the week.
The England international was back in a Spurs shirt less than 12 months after leaving for Fratton Park.
He was one of two changes from the side which beat the Latics 3-1 in the FA Cup at White Hart Lane 10 days ago, the other seeing Ledley King return in defence.
David Bentley and Darren Bent both dropped to the bench.
Wigan boss Steve Bruce made seven changes to his line-up, the most significant being the return of first-choice strikers Emile Heskey and Amr Zaki and goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.
