Alonso boost for Merseyside derby

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has declared himself fit in next Monday’s vital Merseyside clash against Everton at Anfield.

Injured in Liverpool’s FA Cup triumph over Preston 12 days ago, in which he needed seven stiches in his instep, Alonso, who is now back in full training, is hopeful of a return to action against David Moyes’ men.

The injury kept the 27-year-old Spaniard out of last weekend’s stalemate at Stoke as his foot hadn’t heeled sufficiently to wear football boots.

“I am back training. I had the stitches taken out on Monday.” said Alonso.

"I'm still a little bit sore in that area. Right now I am able to play with the inside of my foot but my instep will be okay for Monday."
