Edwin delighted with record
Edwin van der Sar has revealed his delight at setting a new keeping record during Manchester United's win at West Brom.
The Dutch ace needed to keep a clean sheet for at least 84 minutes of United's clash with the Baggies on Tuesday to beat Chelsea stopper Petr Cech's record of going 1,025 minutes without conceding a goal.
Van der Sar duly registered an impressive eleventh straight clean sheet as the Red Devils romped to a comfortable 5-0 victory at the Hawthorns. Not surprisingly, the 38-year-old was hugely proud of his achievement.
"It feels terrific," he told MUTV.
"I was watching the minutes tick away towards the end and even though you're a few goals up you still feel very nervous. When I saw the clock reach 85 minutes I started to get a good feeling.
"It's been some performance from all the defenders who have played in those eleven games especially when you consider we didn't have a settled back four during those matches.
"We've had a lot of changes to deal with (because of injuries) and a lot of players have contributed to the achievement. The fact that everyone has come in and done a job shows the strength of the squad.
Although delighted with his own landmark, the keeper was also quick to point out just how important the win was a United side which now finds itself three points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League table.
"The most important thing is we got a good win," van der Sar explained.
"Scoring five times is also important for the goal difference and now the focus switches to Everton on Saturday.
"We're on top at the moment and long may that last."
