Liverpool destined for the title

Kelvin Leong chances upon an interesting statistic that proves Liverpool could be well on their way to the title.

Rafa Benitez's men grabbed all three points in an ill-tempered game of football at Anfield to close the gap on league leaders Manchester United to just two points.

Although United have one game in-hand, one major statistic might prove that this will no doubt be Liverpool's year.

The last time Liverpool won the domestic title was back in the 1989/1990.

No big deal?

Well, that was also the last time Liverpool did a league double over Chelsea.

It was in the old English Division 1 then and the Red half of Merseyside came out tops on both the home and away league fixtures by a score of 4-1 and 5-2 respectively.

In the away fixture at Stamford Bridge, Peter Beardsley, Ian Rush, Ray Houghton and espnstar.com's very own football pundit, Steve McMahon got the goals for Liverpool.

The unstoppable Reds went on to clinch the double at Anfield with goals from Ronny Rosenthal, Steve Nicol and Ian Rush.

Liverpool also won the Division 1 league title in the 1972/73 and 1965/66 seasons after doing the league double over Chelsea.

Last League double that won them the domestic title

16 December 1989

Chelsea 2-5 Liverpool

Beardsley (3), Rush 2 (5, 79), Houghton (23), McMahon (51)

21 April 1990

Liverpool 4-1 Chelsea

Rosenthal (25), Nicol 2 (36, 80), Rush (82)

Will the historical stats hold up or will Benitez send this wonderful statistic crashing into oblivion?
