Referee admits to blatant error

Frank Lampard will have his red card and suspension rescinded as referee Mike Riley admits his big match blunder.

Riley sent Lampard off in Chelsea's 2-0 loss to Liverpool at the weekend after judging that the midfielder had dangerously dived into a challenge on Xabi Alonso for a 50-50 ball early in the second half.

The England international was disgusted by the call, with match replays showing that he had successfully won the ball in that situation. Instead, Alonso should have been booked for landing a boot on Lampard's shin.

Chelsea will have to take some consolation that Riley has now confessed his mistake to the English FA's disciplinary panel that he wrongfully sent Lampard off in the match.

The 30-year-old dynamic midfielder will now be available for the Blues' upcoming BPL matches with Hull City and Aston Villa, as well as the FA Cup clash against Watford.
