Reina aims for clean sheet record

Pepe Reina wants Liverpool to match Manchester United’s amazing defensive streak and reclaim pole position in the league.

Edwin van der Sar recently set a new British record when he notched up his 13th straight clean sheet in United's 1-0 victory over West Ham at Upton Park.

However, having won three straight Golden Gloves awards himself, Reina is no stranger to such goalkeeping records and has declared that the Reds need to achieve their own amazing streak if they wish to stay in the title hunt until May.

"If you put a run together like United have then it will give you a real chance of success - it is difficult, but we know we can do that," said Reina, who kept 11 consecutive shutouts himself during the 2006/06 season.

"We went from the end of October to the middle of December without conceding any goals. I think we will have to defend like that again in the remainder of this season if we want to compete for honours."

The 26-year-old stopper also pointed out that the game with the Red Devils next month is a likely title decider.

"This is my fourth year here and we've usually done well in the second half of each season.

"All we can do is concentrate on our own game, keep getting good results and then try to take points from them when we go to Old Trafford next month.

"Fernando Torres said recently we have to be close to them when that match comes along, and I agree with that.

"That might mean being just a point or two behind them, although obviously it would be even better if we were top.

"Whatever happens, we have to go into that game still with a chance of winning the league."
