Massive headache for Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he ‘dreads’ picking the team for a match due to the great form his players are in.

Ferguson has been tinkering with his huge team in recent matches as United steamroll their way to an unprecedented quadruple and the team selected for the Barclays Premier League clash against Fulham is likely to be vastly different from the team that thrashed Derby County in the FA Cup last weekend.

Yet while rotation offers Ferguson the option of horses-for-courses selections, the Scot has complained that team selection is becoming an increasingly difficult task.

"Everyone has done so well that I'm beginning to dread picking the team," he said in an interview. "I feel guilty when I am forced to leave someone out who has not only done nothing wrong but who has played exceptionally well."

"It puts the club in a strong position, of course, but it doesn't make the manager's job very easy."

Next week's Champions League tie with Inter Milan is likely to reveal what Ferguson considers to be his best team - at least for that particular fixture - but he remains adamant that, at present, the identity of United's first-choice 11 is unknown even to him.

"People sometimes ask me what I consider to be my best side and the short answer is that I don't have one. I can give you my best 14 or 15 but, better than that, all I can say is that it's a squad game and we have a damn fine squad. In fact, the best!"

Ferguson's options are expected to be increased this evening with Wayne Rooney set to return as a substitute.

"We have handled him in the right way," Ferguson continued. "He is training now. His performances have been excellent and he is back to his best.

"The decision not to involve him on Sunday was a good one because he was able to train and that extra day has brought him on a lot."
