Fergie rejects Welbeck punishment talk
Alex Ferguson has rejected reports that he punished Danny Welbeck when he over-celebrated his goal at Derby last weekend.
Welbeck was not included in the squad to face Fulham last Wednesday and was instead in reserves action in the 5-4 win over Wigan.Instead, it transpired the England U21 star played against Wigan's second string purely to keep his fitness up before he also joins the United squad for what will be his first appearance in a major final.
"Danny Welbeck had to play with the reserves because I had Wayne Rooney back and the boy was needing football," said the United boss.
"He did very well against Derby and then played the full game against Wigan reserves and scored two goals.
"He will also be available for the Carling Cup final."
Welbeck accepted missing out on the victory over Fulham.
"I'm just ready to play whenever I'm called upon and it's always good to get goals, whoever it's for."
Welbeck has caught the eye with his fine displays and spectacular goals for the first team this season - including a stunning finish against Derby County last weekend - and he admits that the improvement in his game has been inevitable after joining first team training.
"Playing with great players every single day, you're bound to improve and I think I have," he said. "I played pretty well tonight, and also it was also great to play with the lads again."
