The World's best bosses

The World's best bosses

Everton's claim that David Moyes is the "greatest manager in the world" will be debated by many football fans.

Here, PA Sport looks at other contenders who could challenge Moyes.

Sir Alex Ferguson (Manchester United)

The Scot's achievements are second to none. In his 22 years with United, he has won more trophies than any other manager in the history of the English game, including 10 Premier League titles and two European Cups. He cut his teeth in Scotland with St Mirren and Aberdeen, winning three league titles and the European Cup Winners' Cup with the Dons.

Fabio Capello (England)

Capello has won the the domestic league title with every club he has managed - AC Milan, Real Madrid, Roma and Juventus - and also won the European Cup with Milan in 1994. The Italian has taken England to the brink of World Cup qualification with half the campaign still to play.

Guus Hiddink (Russia and Chelsea)

The Dutchman has achieved notable success on both the club and international scene. In two spells with PSV Eindhoven he won six Eredivisie titles and a European Cup while he also took Holland to the semi-finals of the World Cup in 1998. He then forged a reputation for success with unfancied countries, notably guiding South Korea to the World Cup semi-finals in 2002. In his temporary spell at Chelsea, he has already won a Champions League quarter-final and an FA Cup semi-final.

Marcello Lippi (Italy)

Lippi enjoyed a trophy-filled spell in two spells as manager of Juventus, winning Serie A five times and reaching the European Cup final four times, triumphing on one occasion. He really cemented his reputation by guiding Italy to World Cup success in 2006 and has since returned to the post.

Jose Mourinho (Inter Milan)

The self-styled 'Special One' has the stats to back up his arrogance. He led unfancied Porto to European Cup glory in 2004 having won the UEFA Cup the previous season and then turned Chelsea's money into trophies - two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two League Cups to be precise. Seems certain to win Serie A in his first season as Inter coach.

Martin O'Neill (Aston Villa)

O'Neill is regarded as one of the most sought-after managers in the Premier League. After taking Wycombe into the Football League for the first time in their history, he helped Leicester become established as a top-flight club and won two League Cups. He won three Scottish Premier League titles in five years at Celtic and took the club to the UEFA Cup final. Has established Villa as challengers to the top four.

espnstar.com's Fan Talk - What you say!

- Tam is the first to fire a salvo for those who are not nominated:

"What about those who have retired, but are still alive, like Kenny Dalglish, etc???"

- Where is Arsene Wenger's name, asks Aashish Ladhwe.

"I was quite surprised when I saw Arsene Wenger's name missing, considering the heights he has reached with such a young team and lower funds from the owners of the club as compared to other big guns in the reputed leagues in Europe. Even though the drought for silverware continues from 2005, his achievements has been quite proilfic. The most important one of them being the development of his young side and helping them achieve new heights on personel as well as club levels. So why is this great manager's name not listed in the list of the best bosses?"

- Subash Padmanaban from Chennai has this to say:

"I guess being a die-hard fan of Manchester United, I would go for Sir Alex as the World's best manager. He has been a legend for Man U, no doubt about it. But no one can deny the fact that Jose Mourinho is equally talented. The United captain Rio Ferdinand once said that he would be expecting someone like Mourinho as the next coach for Man U".

- Mandeep Singh from Delhi gives another vote for Arsene:

"How can Wenger's name be missing from the list of best managers? He is one guy who has developed a BRAND game. A brand of soccer clubs all around the globe try to emulate. Unlike Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool, who shower their managers with all the money they need, Wenger has turned Arsenal into a successful and financially stable club on his own."

- Bhuvnesh from Delhi sends in his Wenger vote:

"It's shocking not to see Arsene Wenger's name on this list. He has made Arsenal the fiercest team in the world. Arsenal FC are a special club because of Arsene Wenger and anyone who can match the achievements of Sir Alex is Arsene Wenger."

- Zain agrees with Tam (and most of the readers who sent in their comments):

"Where is Arsene Wenger? Although he has won no trophies since 2005, he has acieved things with his young team that no one can ever think of. They became the first team to beat AC milan in San Siro and that is a great achievement with such a young side. Their performances against the big four were also very good and last year they challenged for the title. I think under Wenger, Arsenal are best young team in the world. Therefore i think that Arsene wenger's name should in the list because managers are not only judged for winning trophies for the club but also growing and nurturing the young players and raising the confidence of the team."

- Mathew Nainan from Singapore gives his two cents worth:

"Arsene Wenger, Luiz Felipe Scolari (Chelsea fans might disagree), Rafael Benitez and Gerard Houllier are among the world's greatest in my opinion. David Moyes and Martin O'Neill???"

- Bharat Asrani, no doubt an Arsenal fan:

"I actually don't believe you have Martin O'Neill there but not Arsene Wenger! Wenger's credentials speak for itself. He's taken a once-called boring Arsenal to a team that plays the best football on the planet! And he's won titles on the way too! He displaced Manchester United from the top and make people stand up and notice my Gunners!

He's lost players on the way that were integral to his team but still managed to make teams that were feared around Europe! If Wenger isn't considered to be one of the best in the business, then none on that list is good enough! In Arsene we Trust!"

- Aakash Lakdawala casts his vote:

"Sir Alex Ferguson truly deserves the credit of best manager. David Moyes won luckily against United because of their weak squad selection. Sir Matt Busby also deserves to be best manager. Fergie has made the team, he did not get it. So Everton should think and make a statement. They are overboosted by recent success and they have yet to win FA Cup."
