Aston Villa are eying a deal to bring Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell to Villa Park.

Martin O'Neill has lost Martin Laursen to retirement and is looking to former Tottenham and Arsenal defender Campbell to fill the gap, according to The Sun.

Campbell will be out-of-contract in July and could relish a chance to play Europa League football next season.

Howeever, Pompey was to keep hold of the 34-year-old defender and have offered him a new contract worth around £40,000-a-week.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal star has also been linked with a host of European outfits, including Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne and Greek team Atromitos.
