Man United's strangest ever signings
With Michael Owen set to join Man United, we bring you five other Alex Ferguson signings that have raised a few eyebrows.
Massimo Taibi (1999-2000, 4 appearances, 0 goals)
A signing that proved just how poor Fergie used to be at spotting top goalkeeping talent.
This particular stopper arrived in a blaze of glory from Italian outfit Venezia in 1998 and was duly named Man of the Match following an impressive debut against Liverpool. The good times were not to last.
Taibi lost his first team place after an infamous mistake against Southampton, allowing a Matt Le Tissier shot to trickle through his legs.
Dubbed the ‘Blind Venetian' by one British tabloid, he was also in goal during a 5-0 defeat against Chelsea.
Not surprisingly, a transfer to Reggina swiftly followed. United's loss? Definitely not.
Wlliam Prunier (1995-1996, 2 appearances, 0 goals)
Joined United in 1995 with Fergie looking for a continental-style centre-back who could pass the ball. Oooops!
After impressing on his debut against Queens Park Rangers, the Frenchman had the proverbial nightmare away at Tottenham, a heavy defeat that United fans still blame him for.
Rather surprisingly, he was subsequently offered a long-term deal by Fergie, but opted to go elsewhere.
He retired from football in 2004 after a spell in the United Arab Emirates.
Eric Djemba-Djemba (2003-2005, 20 appearances, 0 goals)
So good they named him twice - not!
After starring for Nantes in France, young Eric arrived at Old Trafford in 2003, ostensibly to become the replacement for United legend Roy Keane. It was not to be.
After failing to impress the OT hierarchy, Djemba-Djemba was shipped off to Aston Villa where he also struggled to find his feet.
He is still earning a living from football - in Denmark for Odense BK.
Jordi Cruyff (1996-2000, 34 appearances, 8 goals)
Was only signed because his dad was one of the world's greatest footballers. Enough said.
David Bellion (2003-2005, 24 appearances, 4 goals)
Once went AWOL whilst his then employers Sunderland were fighting for their Premier League lives.
Signed for United in 2003 and duly scored against Celtic in a pre-season friendly.
A lack of first team football and a serious leg injury blighted Bellion's time in Manchester, a stint that was cut short by a loan move to West Ham and a subsequent move back to his native France.
Gone but definitely not forgotten!
