Ferguson tips Macheda to shine

Sir Alex Ferguson is certain that Italian youngster Federico Macheda has a big future at Manchester United.

With Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez enjoying pastures new, United supporters are looking for more heroes to celebrate.

Michael Owen is not doing a bad job for starters, adding to his debut-day goal against a Malaysian XI last Saturday with another in a 2-0 win over the same opposition in Kuala Lumpur last night.

But Ferguson was also delighted that Macheda got his first pre-season goal.

The United manager has taken a leap of faith with the 17-year-old Italian by handing him the coveted fourth striking berth this term.

Ferguson is confident his trust will not be misplaced.

"Macheda is top drawer, a hero in the making, just as Cristiano was," said Ferguson.

"It is hard to believe he is just 17. We probably need to check his birth certificate because I reckon he is at least 28."

Macheda's public introduction to the United first team last term also included an FA Cup semi-final appearance against Everton.

Little wonder there has been no sense of awe from the Italian as he mingles with the senior stars on the Red Devils' Far East tour, and no sign of inferiority either in training, where his eye for goal is even sharper than that of legendary predator Owen.

"Federico has plenty of confidence," admitted Ferguson.

"When he came on the other night he dropped into midfield and ran down their left-side.

"He is a player all right - and tough as old boots. He can look after himself.

"He does not have the lightning reactions of Ronaldo but he is quick around the box and he has an eye for goal.

"He was way in front of everyone with his finishing the other day - and I mean everyone. It was magnificent to see."

However, Ferguson could hardly ignore Owen, who is showing all his old predatory instincts even allowing for the limited nature of the opposition.

His goal was a real poacher's effort and not long afterwards he also sneaked away from the Malaysian defence but was unfortunate to hit a post.

"The goal was typical Michael Owen," said Ferguson.

"He was the first person to react in the penalty box. And the second was a perfect situation for him. He was quick with his run and got in front of the defender.

"He was unlucky it came off the post.

"Overall I was pleased with his contribution. It was good. He has done well."
