Dirk Kuyt believes that Liverpool's midfield duo Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano are crucial for success next season.

The tireless forward has stressed the importance of Alonso and Mascherano, and hailed the pivotal roles they played in last season's second place Premier League finish.  

Both players have rejoined the squad for their tour of the far-east, but their futures remain in doubt.

Alonso in particular appears to be on the verge of a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid, with the 27-year-old expressing his pride at being on the same wish-list as Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka.

Liverpool's unpredictable financial situation could be another factor, with reports suggesting at least one of the central midfielders will have to be sold to cover the losses of parent company Kop Holdings Ltd.

Despite the speculation, Kuyt, who scored 12 goals in last season's Premier League, is remaining positive .  

"It's really good to have them back and it's good to see all the other lads also."

"We have a very good team which we showed last year and now we want to improve in the coming season and hopefully we can do that,"

It is expected that Liverpool could receive at least £30million if Xabi Alonso does make the move to the Bernabeu.
