"We couldn't have done any more"

Reds stopper, Pepe Reina, is focused on another grueling Premier League season but has his mind set on the 2010 World Cup as well.

Liverpool ended last season with the best losing record having recorded only two losses in the entire campaign.

However, it was their many unexpected draws, 11 in total, against the likes of bottom-half teams like Stoke City, Fulham, Hull and Wigan that threw away a possible first league title in 18 years.

Spanish goalkeeper, Reina, reckons Liverpool gave it their best shot last season but just fell short at the last hurdle.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool's exhibition match on Sunday against a Singapore XI, Reina said: "Last season was a record for most goals scored at the club, it was also a record in Liverpool's history to have only two defeats the whole season.

"We couldn't have done anymore than that.

"But between the top four, it is very close, you need to win a lot of your games most of the time."

As for the new season, Reina sees the competition provided by Brazilian keeper, Diego Cavelieri, as a positive challenge rather than a threat.

"Of course, I am very happy to have him (Diego Cavalieri) because he is a great professional, a great keeper.

"It helps me a lot as he is pushing me (for a starting spot) all the time. Not just now, but even last season, he was improving as well so I am very happy to have him at the club." the Spaniard added.

He also revealed that although he is utterly focused on Liverpool, he is also eyeing to wrestle the numero uno jersey from Real Madrid's Iker Casillas in the Spanish national team at the 2010 World Cup.

The former Villarreal stopper said: "I will try my best, but he (Casillas) has been there for many many years already. But the first thing I have to do is to play well for my club and if it comes, it comes. So I just have to keep pushing."

Reina and his teammates are currently in Singapore as part of Liverpool's 2009 ‘Kop comes to Asia' Tour.

An exhibition game between Liverpool and the Singapore national team will take place tomorrow at the Kallang National Stadium.
