Rafa Benitez has stated that Xabi Alonso must make his decision - whether to stay at Liverpool or leave for Real Madrid.

Alonso had a cameo appearance for the Reds in their Singapore stopover, coming into the game in the second half in the Merseyside giants' 5-0 thumping of the Lions.

"We are talking about this for two months, and I think it's a question for him, not for us," Benitez told reporters at a press conference in Singapore.

"He has three more years on his contract and we know that he's a great player. That's the reason we signed him and we've renewed his contract."

"So you will have to ask him."

Source indicate that Alonso will meet Benitez in the next 48 hours to discuss his future at Liverpool, with the decision whether to move back to Spain very much the midfielder's choice.
