Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has revealed that Alberto Aquilani's experience was one of the Italian's selling factors.

After the exit of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, Benitez has wasted no time in procuring his replacement.

On Wednesday, the Merseyside club confirmed they received permission from AS Roma to discuss personal terms with Italian international Aquilani.

Aquilani, who could cost Liverpool £20million, will undergo a medical on Thursday.

Benitez told liverpoolfc.tv: "Alberto is a very good player who has a winning mentality and great experience in both Serie A and the Champions League.

"He has long been recognised as a top class talent in Italy, captaining his country at both Under 19 and Under 21 levels before establishing himself in the senior national side."
