Preview: Your insider's guide to Bolton

Chris Deary reveals all about Bolton Wanderers to Eugene YS Han ahead of the new Barclays Premier League season.

What is the best or worst your club can achieve this coming season?

The worst thing would be for the season to be a complete non-event, like it was last year. The best thing would be for us to find some purpose again. When you support a team like Bolton you know you're never going to win the Champions League, so the way you measure satisfaction is much more complicated than just league position or the standard of football, it's about feeling you're part of something exciting. At the moment it feels like we're just drifting aimlessly.

Who is your key player?

The sensible answer would be Jussi Jaaskelainen because he's worth about ten points a season on his own. But I'm going to say 21-year-old Mark Davies because he showed real promise last season, and if a young player like him can put in a few eye-catching performances it might just give fans a reason to get excited about going to games again.

Who is the unsung hero in your team?

I'm not sure he's unsung as such, but Matt Taylor's importance to the club goes beyond what usually gets mentioned. In an era when footballers are increasingly detached from supporters, it's refreshing to see one who seems to genuinely enjoy having a bond with the fans. You can tell that he just loves playing football and loves playing for Bolton Wanderers.

Who is a waste of space?

Gavin McCann gets a hard time from the fans, but the person everybody will be watching this season is Johan Elmander, especially as Gary Megson hasn't signed any more strikers this summer. A lot of money was spent on Elmander and the jury is still very much out. He needs to stay fit and score a few goals otherwise he could soon find himself in the 'waste of space' file alongside McCann.

Describe your best moment of last season.

To reiterate what I said in question one about it not all being about results, I loved the way we came back from 4-0 down at Chelsea. We still lost the game 4-3 but it reminded me of the old Bolton, the one that wasn't afraid of anybody. That's the kind of spirit we need to see more of this season.

Is your manager the right person for the job?

This is a real can of worms subject with Bolton fans. Outsiders, like pundits and fans of other clubs, they just look at results and then argue that he's done as well as could be expected, but it's different when you actually support a club and you've got an emotional investment in it. There's nothing rational about being a football fan. It's difficult to explain but I just feel like he's sucked the life and soul out of the club.

Which area do you think your team needs strengthening?

In short, we need players who can score goals out of nothing. In days gone by it came from people like Stelios and Kevin Nolan, but these days it's often difficult to see where the goals are coming from. I don't mind us playing dour, functional football, but within that plan you also need someone who might actually be able to win you the game.

Young player to look out for?

As I said before, hopefully Mark Davies will stay fit and give the fans something to feel optimistic about. This could be a huge season for Gary Cahill too. He got in to the England squad at the end of last season and now is the time for him to really establish himself as a top Premier League player. The sad thing, though, is that if they do too well we'll probably end up selling them to bigger clubs.

Where will your club finish this season?

To be honest, it could be anywhere from 8th to 20th, but I suspect it will be somewhere in the middle of that again. As with last season, there will probably be enough teams who are even worse than we are to ensure relegation isn't too much of an issue, but it's difficult to see us being consistent enough to push on in to the top half of the table.

How long have you supported Bolton?

I went to my first game 17 years ago. It was a goalless draw with Sunderland around Christmas time and it was bloody awful. I found the mediocrity of it all rather endearing though (bearing in mind we had a supermarket at one end of our ground in those days), and I've since come to the realise that the consolation for supporting a team that never wins anything is that it makes you a better human being. It's character building.

Name your all-time favourite player at the club.

John McGinlay, because he looked like a builder, drank like a navvy and still managed to bang in 25 goals a season. He was from the last genreation of footballers who fans actually felt they had something in common with. Most footballers these days have more in common with 50 Cent. It means nothing to me.

Which three teams will be relegated this season?

In an ideal world, Manchester United, Manchester United Reserves and the Manchester United youth team. In reality, I'll go for Wolves, Stoke and Portsmouth.
