Preview: Insider's guide to Aston Villa
Damian Dugdale gives Eugene YS Han the scoop on Aston Villa ahead of the BPL 2009/10 season.
What is the best / worst your club can achieve this coming season?
The best we can achieve next season would be a top four place. It won't be easy and will need things to happen like they haven't happened before under O'Neill, but everything is possible. The worst for us would be anything not inside a European spot.
Who is your key player?
Last season it was most definitely Martin Laursen but as it stands now, there isn't one player that you could consider key, but if I had to pick a name, I'd say Ashley Young.
Who is the unsung hero in your team?
Again, like the 'key player' question, there's probably isn't an unsung hero just yet. I fancy Carlos Cueller could be good next season, but then there is Nigel Reo-Coker, who if given a proper run in his preferred position, could really come good next season.
Who is a waste of space?
Nobody in the Villa team is a waste of space. Some could be improved on with new players and some are still developing specific areas of their game, but they're all Villa players and they all have a job to do.
Describe your best moment of last season.
The best moment of last season would be the 3-2 win at Everton in the league. We were winning 2-1 with seconds to go when Everton got an equaliser. With the clock at something like 93 minutes, Ashley Young scores the winner.
Is your manager the right person for the job?
Martin O'Neill is absolutely the right person for the job. He gets the most out of players and right now that is what we need.
Which area do you think your team needs strengthening?
After beating Juventus and Porto in two very competitive Peace Cup games recently I should say we are fine in all departments, but the reality is we need a central midfielder that can create something and likes to attack.
Young player to look out for?
We have so many young players coming through it is difficult to name just one. Quite possibly our player of the Peace Cup was Marc Albrighton and he is only 19, a local lad and a very good player. If he develops like we hope next season, he will be finish the season as our first choice right winger.
Where will your club finish this season?
Where we finish this season depends largely on how much money the owner makes available. I believe we could finish in a top four place, but it does come down to if the money is there and convincing certain players to come play for us, which unfortunately these days, comes down to money also. If I had to pick a place right now, I'd say 7th, but with the right players, I'd pick 4th.
How long have you supported Aston Villa?
I've supported Villa all my life. Where I went to school it was all Villa and it was just the natural choice.
Name your all-time favourite players at the club?
This is a tough question. I've always liked Alan McInally - he was a big man who played with aggression and while he didn't spend long at Villa, he was one of the first players I remember really following at the club.
But then, you've got Paul McGrath, who just seemed to make it look so easy and as fast as defenders go, was one of the best I've ever seen, but then we also had Martin Laursen, who sadly retired last season that some say was even better than McGrath. It's too difficult to pick just one player, sorry.
Which three teams will be relegated this season?
You've got to look to the clubs that have just come up and I fancy they will all struggle. Also add Hull and Stoke to that list and I think you can pick your three relegated teams from that list.
