Premier League Weekend Preview

Premier League Weekend Preview

Chelsea will look to maintain their 100% start to the Barclays Premier League season as they travel to Wigan on Saturday.

Carlo Ancelotti's side hold a three-point lead at the top of the table after coming through their first serious examination of the campaign with flying colours by beating London rivals Tottenham 3-0 last weekend.

Wigan have struggled for form since an excellent 2-0 win at Aston Villa on the opening day and, after last week's 4-0 thrashing by Arsenal, their poor record against the 'big four' clubs is not expected to improve.

The Latics have not beaten Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester United since their promotion to the top flight in 2005 and the Old Trafford side have also enjoyed a convincing win, 5-0, over them already this season.

Wigan will also have to contend with the threat of striker Didier Drogba, who has recovered from a calf injury suffered against Spurs and was rested for the midweek Carling Cup win over QPR.

Blues assistant boss Ray Wilkins said: "He came off with the most horrendous bout of cramp.

"We thought it was a bit more serious but the scan has revealed there's nothing in there so hopefully he will be okay to take part on Saturday."

Second-placed United will hope to keep up the pressure as they travel to Stoke while Liverpool, six points behind Chelsea in third, take on struggling Hull.

Stoke's form at the Britannia Stadium proved crucial in the Potters' survival in the top flight last season and United needed an 83rd-winner from Carlos Tevez to win there.

Michael Owen will be hoping for a start after his late winner off the bench in last week's derby thriller against Manchester City and his role in setting up Danny Welbeck's goal against Wolves in the Carling Cup.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson may consider a change in goal with Ben Foster looking uncertain against City and Stoke renowned for their robust style. Tomasz Kuszczak featured in the Wolves game and could be asked to continue.

Liverpool will be expected to brush past a Hull side who have won just twice in their last 28 Premier League games.

Hull's disappointing loss to Birmingham last weekend was followed by an equally demoralising 4-0 thrashing by Everton in the Carling Cup and the pressure is growing on manager Phil Brown.

Everton's win at the KC Stadium put them in good heart for their trip to winless bottom side Portsmouth.

Coming after convincing wins over AEK Athens and Blackburn, the Toffees' season - after losing three of their opening four Premier League games - is now getting started.

"The players want to emulate what they did last season and push on from that," said assistant manager Steve Round.

"Finishing fifth and getting to an FA Cup final is what they expect now."

Pompey lifted morale ahead of the game with a 3-1 Carling Cup win over League One side Carlisle.

Another struggling side, Blackburn, face a tough test as Aston Villa visit Ewood Park while Fulham host Arsenal in a tricky London derby.

Tottenham, who have lost their last two after winning their first four, are back in action against promoted Burnley while Birmingham take on Bolton.

Sunderland are at home to Wolves on Sunday while Manchester City must wait until Monday for their next outing as West Ham visit Eastlands.
