Martinez: We deserved to win

Roberto Martinez was left wondering what would have been after Wigan scrapped a 1-1 draw with ten-man Manchester City.

Charles N'Zogbia had given Wigan the lead on the stroke of half-time before Marton Petrov equalised two minutes after the restart.

Then City's Pablo Zabaleta was red carded in the 65th minute and then it was all Wigan.

Shay Given eventually emerged as the hero for City after he made several point-saving saves.

Overall, Martinez was pleased with his side's performance.

"It was a very pleasing performance from start to finish," he said.

"We knew the role we had today. We were playing against a very talented side I felt we stopped them playing overall.

"They going down to 10-man probably that gave them a reason to get very solid behind the ball and I thought it was a real entertaining game, really open two teams that wanted to win and I felt that in every department we deserved to win.

"But I am very pleased with the performance."

Martinez refused to criticise his side for conceding their lead so soon after half-time and added that the team would learn from their mistakes.

"It happens it is not the first time," he added.

"We are still in that transitional period we still are learning we conceded against Chelsea in a very similar time and we did that again.

"But the pleasing aspect is the reaction we still got on the ball and we kept creating and we were trying to win the game.

"We will get better and we will learn from that. But obviously we are playing against a very special side and they are going to punish you if you make a simple mistake and probably that was the only time that we left our back four exposed in the whole game."
